Harold Louie Schmidt was born on March 8, 1936 in Circle, to parents Fred and Sophie Schmidt of Watkins, Mont. When he was a young child his family moved to Marsh, Mont., where Harold grew up and spent his entire life, except for the time he served in the Army.

Harold was the youngest child of a blended family that included 5 brothers and 3 sisters; Emil, Robert, John and Lydia Schmidt Maier, brothers Oscar and Edward Ulrich, and sisters Martha Ulrich Brost and Rose Koenig Jacobs.

Harold is survived by sister Lydia Maier; twelve nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; and good friend Tom Ulrich.

Harold had countless self-taught talents which he continued to hone throughout his life. He was an artist, painter, trapper, taxidermist, poet, gardener, fisherman, rancher and beer and wine maker. He even made hats from leather that he tanned himself. He did all of this without straying far from his much loved Marsh. He was a colorful story teller with a loud distinct voice and an incredible sense of humor.

He was a treasure to all who knew him well, especially his nieces and nephews. He truly was one of a kind!!

Harold passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at the Glendive Medical Center after suffering a stroke on Friday, May 26, 2017.
