Helen Beres, age 83, of Glendive, passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at the Eastern Montana Veteran’s Home in Glendive.
A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the Silha Funeral Home in Glendive with Father Francis Schreiber officiating. Rite of Committal will be held in Dawson County Cemetery. Silha Funeral Home of Glendive has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Helen was born on July 27, 1934 on the family farm in Richey to parents Christian and Rosina (Job) Treftz. She was the seventh child of ten, and had five brothers and four sisters. She was raised and educated in Richey. They all worked hard on the farm, but had many good times as well. Helen’s dad owned 200 sheep and he would send the children out to the hills with the sheep every day with a saddle horse and two dogs. It was a relief to Helen and her siblings when her dad finally sold the sheep. After high school, Helen continued her education at Dawson Community College. She was married to her first husband for 18 years and they spent their marriage traveling for his military job. During this time, they lived in seven states, and also lived in Newfoundland and Germany for a time. To this union, three children were born. Their son Chris was born in Glendive; daughter Teresa was born at the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base in Stevensville, Newfoundland; and daughter Lynn was born in Fort Knox, Ky. On August 27, 1982 Helen married Jack Beres in Deadwood, S.D. and they spent 15 years together before his death.
Helen worked at many places in her life, including Fashion Island, Action for Eastern Montana and Head Start. After her retirement, she worked some part time jobs and was a volunteer at many organizations including the American Legion Auxiliary and DCAU/The Gallery, which was her absolute favorite place to be.
In her free time, Helen enjoyed sewing and quilting, painting, woodworking and other various crafts. She liked to read and do crossword puzzles. Her favorite past time, however, was spending time with her family. Helen always tried to keep the kids in her family involved in different activities, whether it was rock hunting- a family favorite- or painting a picture. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren and loved to see their talents come to life. She also spent time organizing three family reunions in order to keep the whole family close.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack; her son, Chris; three infant grandchildren; brothers Hank Treftz, Gust Treftz, Sam Treftz, Gordon Treftz and Elmer Treftz; and sisters Emily Schumacher, Clara Baker and Joan Baker.
Helen is survived by her daughters Teresa (Tom) Divers of Jamestown, N.D. and Lynn (Doug) Fisher of Oakridge, Tenn.; grandchildren Jessica Divers and her daughter Shayne Mickelson of Jamestown, Trista Fisher of Salt Lake, Utah, Aaron Fisher of Boulder, Colo., and Jason Fisher of Boulder, Colo.; sister Martha (Dave) McCloy of Glendive; sister-in-law Patty Treftz of Chinook, Mont.; brother-in-law Ed Baker of Billings; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Helen’s name are suggested to The Gallery in Glendive.
