A Montana son and Army-proud soldier died on September 22, 2016, at Bozeman Health Hospital in Bozeman. David Lee Jones, born August 5, 1947, was also “our son”, “my dad”, “our brother”, and “my husband.”

Born to Anna (Patterson) and Merlin Jones in Glendive, Dave’s childhood was instilled by his parents with values and beliefs that carried him through life.  After high school where he played football, the family moved to Bozeman and Dave went to Montana State University (MSU,) Class of 1969.  He was an ROTC Cadet, and after graduating with a degree in history, began his 26-year Army career at Fort Benning, Ga., that took him throughout the states, South Korea, Germany and Hawaii.  His peers and senior officers recognized him as a soldier’s soldier—Dave’s men and women took precedence over his own interests far ahead of his own life.  Recognition of any kind did not belong to him but to the 21-year old enlisted soldier and the non-commissioned officers who serve our nation and who would give their lives, definitely not to any leaders way behind the lines.  Colonel Jones would tell you this at great length until he had all listeners thoroughly convinced.

Dave loved to chat as Dean, Kone, CSM Hensley and 1SG Jones would all attest.  He talked about basketball, football, who not to vote for at any time in the political cycle, and if you were really lucky, about the Civil War.  One could not meet him without quickly learning that Montana was God’s country; he was a walking, talking Chamber of Commerce for the state.

After retirement in 1994, Dave returned home and was lucky enough to have a mini “homestead.”  He was the ditch rider for Mammoth Ditch, retiring this year, and thoroughly enjoyed the folks he met:  Bob and Blayne, Dick, Rick, and so many others. He mastered woodworking, could build almost anything, and made a couple of hunting knives and black powder rifles from scratch with skills he had learned from his dad.  His library fills bookcases; “Killer Angels” by Michael Shaara his favorite “even if it was fiction.”  Years of hunting turned into simply enjoying his beloved Montana outdoors.

Dave married the late Kathleen Erickson in 1967, and they had one son. He then married the former Hannelore Hohne and divorced in 1980.  He leaves Linda Tilton Jones, whom he married in 1981, now at home in Belgrade.  He is also survived by his parents, Anna and Merlin Jones of Belgrade. His second love was his son, Kelly Michael Jones, and his precious wife, Silvia Garcia Jones; and next were his beloved grandsons, Cole and Zack, who made his days sunny, all of San Diego, Calif.  He is further survived by his sister, Carolyn Robinson and her husband, Larry of Belgrade and their three daughters, Stacy and Kevin Davis of Post Falls, Idaho, and their children, Logan and Natal; Tana and Kevin Frueh of Belgrade and their son, Peyton; and Joy and Bo Davis of Charlotte, N.C., and their children, Jaylen and Jurney.  Dave’s sister, Aneda and husband, Bake Riebeek, also survive him in Arboles, Colo.  Other family members and friends will remember Dave always.

A private funeral service will be held in Glendive.

Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service.  www.dokkennelson.com.

Wilbur James “Bud” Baker died peacefully on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at his home in Fairview surrounded by his family and friends.

A celebration of life service for Bud will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2016 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Waterhole in Fairview.

Bud was born on May 21, 1939 in Poplar, Mont. to Eugene and Lucille Baker.  He attended school in Scobey, Mont. where he graduated with the class of 1957. Bud ended his high school days by winning three events in the District High School Rodeo in Scobey. He then went on to win state in bull riding and competed in the National Finals in Albuquerque where he placed in both bull riding and bulldogging.

On June 7, 1959 Bud married Joan Treftz in Richey.  From this union three children were born: Barry, Gary and Leann.

Bud began working for the Montana State Highway Department in 1957. He worked on many bridge projects over the next 16 years in Glasgow, Sidney, Glendive, Great Falls, Ekalaka and Miles City. In 1973 he moved to Richey and took over operation of the family farm. He continued to farm and ranch 3 miles south of Richey until 1997 when he sold the farm, purchased a tractor trailer and finished his working career joining his brother, Richard, at Midnight Trucking in Fargo, N.D.

Bud spent his retirement years in Fairview where he could devote his time to his passion of restoring and repairing old windmills. One of his most recent restorations resides at the Frontier Gateway Museum in Glendive. He enjoyed fishing and spent many days on the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers with friends and family. The highlight of every year was spending elk season up at Taylor Fork with a tight group that shared his love of the mountains and hunting. But if you were new to the group, that was ok, everyone was welcome and treated as family. It was always good to have new ears to hear old stories.

Cowboy, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, mentor and friend… Bud was a lot of things to a lot of people. He was also the definition of tough, but had a gentleness and smile that touched your heart. He always made everyone feel comfortable and welcome.

Bud is survived by his sons, Barry (Charlene) Baker of Odem, Texas and Gary (Stephanie) Baker of Fairview; daughter, Leann (Kevin) Pignone of Libertyville, Ill.;  brothers, Eddy (Clara) and Jerry Baker; and sister, Maxine (Don) Manthei. He also leaves behind 9 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Lucille Baker; wife, Joan Baker; brothers, Ben and Richard Baker; and grand-daughter, Jeni Carter.

Ernest L. Reynolds, 64, of Powell, Wyo., died Saturday, October 1, 2016, at Spirit Mountain Hospice in Cody, Wyo.

He was born July 29, 1952, in Ardmore, Okla. to Dwayne (Rusty) Reynolds and Alma (Beadle). He graduated from Tioga High School and attended Wahpaton State School of Science. Ernie trained to go into the upholstery business, but after only a few months realized he would be penniless if he continued this path. Meticulous about detail, working on each project took far too long, keeping his profit non-existent.

Ernie married Grace Slehofer, and to this union son Ben Reynolds was born. Ernie drove truck for Suhr Transport for 13 years, and always enjoyed driving. To Ernie, driving was not just reaching the destination, it was the journey there…every town, each mountain, all landmarks and scenery.

In his younger years, Ernie was an avid fisherman and spent many hours perfecting his fly fishing techniques. He enjoyed camping, four-wheeling and hiking. Hiking the Mont. and Wyo. mountains was a favorite pastime of his.

In August 1984, Ernie married Mary Erickson. He not only gained a wife, but also a 13-year-old daughter, Tracy Marie. They lived in Glendive for several years.

After losing eyesight in one eye, Ernie attended Butte Technical Institute and trained to be a machinist. In 1989 the family moved to Powell, where Ernie ran a computer lathe for Weatherford for 21 years. He retired for a period of time and then landed his dream job, which was driving electrical panels to oilfield substations, wind farms or communication centers for Dave Wyman at Specialty Electrics, Inc.

Ernie was diagnosed with cancer in 2014, and fought a superb battle, always with an excellent attitude. Although he was not able to attend granddaughters Kaycee and Logan’s activities, he looked forward to their visits and always talked about their achievements.

Ernie is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary; children, Ben Reynolds of Glendive and Tracy (James) Kern of Shepherd, Mont.; brother, Robert D. (Darlene) Reynolds of Williston, N.D.; nephews, Cole (Tonya) Reynolds, Boone Reynolds and niece, Lonnie (Mike) Iverson, all of Williston; aunt, Ruby Menton of Oklahoma City, Okla.; former wife and life-long friend, Grace Koffler-Evinrude; and many cousins and their extended families. All who loved Ernie take comfort from knowing he is in the loving arms of Christ.

The family requests memorials in Ernie’s name be sent to Hope Lutheran Church, 588 Cary Street, Powell, WY 82435.

Ralph John Schaffel, 90, of Glendive, passed away on October 8th at his daughter’s home in Billings.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 14, 2016 at the Glendive United Methodist Church with Pastor Ruth Mckenzie officiating.

He was born on September 26, 1926 in Allen, Saskatchewan and moved with his mother Amelia Schaffel to Bloomfield shortly after his birth.

He attended school in the Bloomfield area before moving to Glendive where he attended Dawson County High School until he turned 18.  He enlisted in the United States Army and served with the 160th Infantry Regiment in the Pacific theater, during World War II.  He was among the first troops to guard the 39th parallel in Korea.  Ralph was very proud to have gone on a Big Sky Honor Flight to Washington, DC.

Upon returning from the war he went to work for Robin’s Implement where he bought his first new vehicle, a 1946 International pickup he still had the receipt for.  He would then develop a need for speed which led to numerous fast cars, including his beloved Hudsons, and motorcycles, with Harley Davidsons being his favorite.

Ralph married Evelyn Heitz on May 2, 1953. Together they had two children, Debra, born in 1955, and Jim, born in 1959. After nearly 40 years of loving marriage filled with great vacations and times with family and friends, Evelyn was taken by cancer.

Ralph worked for Consolidated Freightways, Kampschror’s and Curtis Industries before going to work for Hedahls in 1968. He would retire from Hedahls in 1996, but his retirement wasn’t a perfect fit so he soon returned to work as a part time employee, helping out on and off for many more years. At one time he was working three part time jobs, adding running vehicles for HKT Big Sky Motors and helping deliver and assemble furniture for Town & Country Oak. He still found time for his favorite hobby, woodworking, completing many projects both large and small.

Ralph married Gayle Richey on November 9, 2001.  Following her passing, he had lived with his daughter, at Grandview in Glendive and Aspen Meadows Assisted Living in Billings.

Ralph’s final new vehicle purchase, like his first, was a pickup, although this one was a little faster, a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado SS. He sold it to his grandson in 2014 on the condition that his ashes would ride to the cemetery in it. On Father’s Day in his 87th year he was handed the keys and proceeded to take it up to 107 mph, where it thankfully governed out!

Ralph was preceded in death by his wives, Evelyn and Gayle Schaffel, and son-in-law, Westley Toepke.

He is survived by his daughter, Debra Toepke of Glendive; son, Jim (Louise) Schaffel of Billings; grandson, Eric Knudson of Glendive; granddaughters, Lisa (Ben) Ballew of Billings and Stephanie Schaffel of Portland; great-grandsons, Cooper and Coby Ballew of Billings. Brother-in-law Jack and Sue Nelson Eaton of Billings became special friends.  Many thanks to Sue for all her help and support during this time.

When you remember him, think of that infectious smile and the twinkle in his eye when he was talking to the ladies. You’ll be happy to know he was still flirting with all the girls from hospice care that came to his 90th birthday, a party which included belly dancers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Sagebrush Alley Senior Center at 604 E. Grant Ave., Glendive, MT 59330.

In January 1974, he met Deborah (Deb) Arnold, and they were married in August in Richardton, N.D. at St. Mary’s Church after a whirlwind courtship. In 1975 both Delford and Deb graduated from Dickinson State College. That fall he returned to the farm while Deb taught at Sacred Heart Schools in Glendive and later at Richey High School. They farmed together for many years and experienced a number of hailstorms, grasshoppers and drought, as well as good years. In 1983 and 1984 Robyn Elizabeth and Max Tobe were born and provided a continual source of comfort and joy in his life. He was fiercely proud of his children and the kind of people they had become.

Delford is survived by Deborah, his wife of 42 years; his children, Robyn (Jon) Wilkinson of Douglas, Wyo.; Max (Josie) Milne of Williston, N.D.; his grandchildren, Abigail, Elizabeth, Allison, Liberty, Thomas, and Paul; his sister, Darlene Mowdy of Tioga, N.D.; numerous nieces and nephews; and his sisters’ and brothers’-in-law.

Delford was preceded in death by his parents, Tobe and Alice Milne; his sister, Diane; and his brother-in-law, Ralph.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Kessler, Ava Boschee, Tammy and Belinda, Karen Arnold-Truax, and the nurses and staff at the Glendive Medical Center and Sidney Health Center for the wonderful care given to Delford.

Remembrances, condolences and pictures may be shared with the family at www.fulkersons.com. Memorials may be sent to Sidney Health Center Hospice or a church of your choice.

Florence was born April 26, 1920 to parents Etta (Brailey) and Harvey Winger in Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated from East High School in Cleveland and worked in their family owned hardware store. In 1945 her parents sold their business and the family moved to a farm near Allegan, Mich.  Florence married William (Bill) Stone on November 9, 1945 in Allegan, Mich. after he was discharged from the Army. A year later they were blessed with the birth of their son, Richard (Rick) Stone.

Bill’s work took them all over the United States until 1965 when he went to work for Midrivers Communications in Miles City. While living in Miles City, Florence attended June Beauty School obtaining her manager’s License and completed the H&R Block Income Tax Course.

Bill was transferred to Glendive in 1969. Florence helped open the first H&R Block Tax Office and managed that office for 4 years. She ran her own tax office in her home another 14 years, retiring in 1987.

While living in Glendive, Florence was very active in the R.S.V.P. organization and the Hospital Auxiliary, working in both the hospital’s gift store and resale store “The Attic.” She is still a member of the Glendive chapters of the Eastern Star and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

In 2000 Florence and Bill, along with Bill’s sister Nellie Mesick, moved to Sidney to be near their son Rick and his wife Jeri Dee.

Florence enjoyed everything that involved her 2 grandsons, and 4 great-grandkids.  She and Bill came to all the boys’ activities.  They even took them on their vacations back to Michigan so the boys could play with their cousins. They “adopted” Jeri’s sister’s two boys, Bruce and Peter and treated them as their grandsons too. In her later years the great-grandkids, Connor, Ashlyn, Alexander and Jaclyn were the light of her life.

Florence passed away Sunday, October 23, 2016 at home surrounded by her son and daughter-in-law.

She is survived by her son, Richard (Jeri) Stone of Sidney; grandsons, Michael (Shannon) Stone of Highlands Ranch, Colo. and Christopher (Jamie) Stone of Mendota Heights, Minn.; great-granddaughters, Ashlyn and Jaclyn Stone of Minn.; great-grandsons,  Connor and Alexander of Colo.; her Michigan family; nephew, Robert (Bonnie) Stone and his family; and her extended Sidney family of Jeri Dee’s relatives.

Gary Lee Higlin, 64, passed away at the Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City, S.D. on Friday, October 28, 2016 after a thirteen year battle with cancer.

He was born on September 3, 1952 in Glendive to Harry and Ruby (Stoner) Higlin.

Gary spent his entire childhood in Glendive. After college, Gary returned to Glendive to work for WBI, a division of MDU, until 1990 when he transferred to Rapid City, S.D. where he continued to work for MDU as an engineering assistant and then construction supervisor. He retired in October of 2014 after over thirty years with the company.

Gary loved sports as a participant, fan and coach. He played basketball for the Dawson County Red Devils, Dawson Community College and Dickinson State University where he was also a member of the track team.  In later years, he enjoyed playing softball and then the somewhat frustrating game of golf. On a professional level, Gary was a Green Bay Packers fan through all their up and down seasons, win or lose.

One of his greatest joys came from coaching youth sports – baseball, basketball and football. His all-time favorite team was the Rapid City Blazers, a traveling youth basketball team that started when Rory was in fourth grade and continued through his middle school years.

Another of Gary’s greatest joys was watching his children and grandchildren compete. He was their biggest fan at basketball , baseball, football and volleyball games as well as the steer roping and team roping rodeo events.

Gary was a loyal husband, father and friend. He is survived by his wife, Jackie of Rapid City; three sons, Cole (Jamie) Higlin of Mandan, N.D., Rory (Anna) Rochlitz of Frederick, Colo. and Ryan Rochlitz of Minatare, Neb.; one sister, Rose (Art) Storlie of Bozeman; one brother, Don (Shirley) Berkey of Frankfort, Ill.; and four grandchildren, Micaela, Mackensi, Hannah and Hunter.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Ruby Higlin; as well as one sister, Donna Kunka.

A private family service in Ariz. is pending. A Celebration of Life for family and friends in Rapid City is also pending but will most likely be in the spring or early summer. A Catholic mass for the special intentions of Gary Higlin was held at St. Michael’s Church in Hermosa on November 1, 2016 at 6 p.m.

Honorary pallbearers include his life time friends, Jim Gray, Jack Gannon, Andrew Morse and Wayne Emter; and his two brothers-in-law, John Northrop and Randy Northrop.

Rest in Peace, Gary, your suffering has ended. We will know you are with us each time we hear the whisper of the wind and feel the warmth of the sun on our faces.
