Carla Jean Cowee passed away with family by her side on April 8, 2017.

She was born August 17, 1959 to Gordon and Leona Napton and had two siblings, Doug Napton and Roberta (Bobbie) Slover. Growing up they spent most weekends traveling all over North Dakota visiting Dad in the oil field. She had many stories to tell of her brother and sister but her favorite was when she was about 5 years old. Doug had wrapped her in duct tape and left her in the middle of the road. She could still hear mom yelling “Doug get her out of the road and unwrap her now!” Another one was about how years after she graduated, she was still getting marked absent from school when Bobbie skipped class. In high school she gained an amazing sister-in-law and friend, Mary.

In 1982, Carla welcomed her first son Cory, followed by her daughter Teala in 1987. She met the love of her life in 1988, Gary “Slim” Cowee. They met when she and her sister-in-law Mary owned the Stockman Bar in Wibaux. Gary brought three kids to the relationship, Garret, Ghia and Gerrad. Slowly turning into “his, hers, and ours,” they welcomed their youngest son Justin in 1992. Gary and Carla were pretty much inseparable and you would rarely see one without the other. After she lost her husband in 2012 she lost a small piece of her heart. She got 2 little Yorkies to help fill the void, Milo and Murphy. The highlights of her life were her grandkids Kailer, Jeramiah and Liberty.

Carla loved her children with all her heart. She always made sure they had the best Halloween costume, they loved decorating sugar cookies, or playing rummy into all hours of the night. She loved road trips, especially that trip to Deadwood with her friend Chris Gentry. A friendship that ended up leading her and her family to Ennis, Mont. One of Carla’s favorite things to do was to wander around any shop and look for a good bargain. Sometimes you would even find her out “playing a $5.” She always looked forward to the Ennis-Wibaux football game, not for the outcome but it meant her Wibaux family would be coming to visit. She always said she wasn’t the best cook but anyone who had her baked beans and potato salad would disagree.

Over the years, Carla worked at the Mountain Bell, Southside Tavern, owned the Stockman bar, spent years caring for the residents at Eastmont, and the grocery stores in Wibaux and Ennis. She had so many people that meant the world to her it’s impossible to name them all. Just know she had a special place in her heart for everyone that crossed her path.

She had a heart of gold and always put everyone before herself. She always had a smile and hug ready. Her kind eyes will be missed by every person she touched in her short time with us. We are happy to know she is now with the love of her life Gary and her parents Gordon and Leona.

A celebration of life for Carla will take place on May 27, 2017 at the Sportsman’s Lodge in Ennis, Mont. at 4 p.m.

LaVerne Vivian Berg, age 88, of Glendive, passed away on Friday, May 5, 2017 at the Glendive Medical Center in Glendive.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at the Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at the Glendive Alliance Church in Glendive with Pastor Phil Elmer officiating. Interment will be held in Dawson County Cemetery. Silha Funeral Home of Glendive has been entrusted with the arrangements.

How do you even begin to write about the kindest, most gentle and caring person you’ve ever met? It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts to share that beloved Mother, Sister, Grandma and Great-Grandma left this earth on Friday, May 5, 2017 in Glendive. LaVerne V. (Dahl) Berg was born on August 27, 1928 at her family’s farm outside of Hampden, N.D. to Alfred and Edith Dahl. During her younger years, she worked on the family farm. At age 21, she met a handsome young soldier who had served in WWII at a local dance. He was an excellent dancer and whisked her off her feet. That night was the beginning of a timeless love that spanned decades. LaVerne married Earl O. Berg on October 12, 1951. They never stopped dancing. The couple had perfect timing and people would always stop and watch as they danced. They were married for 49 years, until Earl’s passing on December 19, 2000.

Family was the most important thing in LaVerne’s life. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were everything to her. She loved nothing more than when we were all together. She would cook the most amazing family meals and made every holiday so special for us all. LaVerne was a skilled baker. She could make all the Norwegian cookies. If she knew any of her family was coming to visit, she would whip up a fresh batch of Spritz cookies just for them. Her skills in making Lefse and Norwegian dumplings were unrivaled. LaVerne had a way about her that is nearly impossible to put into words. What can be said is that all children and animals would gravitate to her, sensing her quiet, gentle and kind demeanor that endeared all that were around her. There has never been a person more patient than LaVerne.

LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Duane, Ennis and Dale Dahl; her husband; and two daughters, Earlene and Sheila.

LaVerne is survived by her daughters, Colleen (Edward) Toenyes of Billings, Larene (Scott) Benson of Glendive, and Peggy (Kurt) Carpenter of Denver, Colo.; one son, James (Melissa) Berg of Glendive; and her sister, Beverly Toso of Hoffman, Minn. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Laura (Eric) Simonsen of Billings, Stacy (Ryan) Quast of Fargo, N.D., Shawn (Jill) Wilcox of Glendive, Matthew (Briana) Berg of Glendive, Jessica (Christian) Hannesson of Billings, and Dennis Berg of Bozeman; and her great-grandchildren, Brandon and Evan Simonsen, Koby Wilcox, Adaline Hannesson, Aria Berg, and Jersi and Jaelin Jimison.

Kenneth Andrew Thompson

Kenneth Andrew Thompson of Kalispell, formally of Glendive, went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on May 28, 2017 while at home surrounded by loving family.

Ken was born in Glendive on October 13, 1952 to Clyde and Lorraine (Ostby) Thompson; on a beautiful fall day. He attended both Lincoln and Washington Elementary Schools and then moved on to Dawson County High School. In this time, he made lifelong friends and many memories.

After high school, Ken enlisted in the Army from November 1970 to September 1973 and served in South Korea.

Ken married the love of his life, Margaret (Rogness) Thompson in 1974 after only dating for a little over a month. They were married by Maggie’s father, Reverend Burnis Rogness. The family was a little worried about this hasty marriage; however at this time they have been happily married for 43 years.

After five years of marriage they welcomed their first child; Leah Kristine. Two and a half years later, they welcomed a son, Samuel Andrew. Their family was complete and they loved every minute of time together.

Ken worked for Halliburton Services in Glendive for 12 years. In 1986, the family left Glendive to move to Washington. While there, Ken was injured in a work accident and medically retired, moving the family to Bozeman.  At this time, his new vocation of his favorite career became “Mr. Mom.” This job kept Ken on his toes because the kids were becoming teenagers. Ken made a memorable impression on many of his children’s friends along with some of his daughters boyfriends.

In 2000, Ken welcomed his first granddaughter, Maddy DeShaw and was wrapped around her finger from the minute she was born and for the following 17 years. Ken taught her to play the guitar, and they saw each other every day. Maddy and her Papa had such a special relationship, he was so proud of her success in music, art and academics.

In 2006 his second granddaughter was born, Bella Hodous. She added more spunk, energy and love to an already thankful Papa. He loved cheering her on at her numerous sporting events and was so proud of her success in athletics and academics.

Ken had many things in life that provided him peace and joy. He was an avid beekeeper and took pride in the honey he produced. He was an amazing musician, playing the guitar and singing at home and at church. He loved hiking and hunting for fossils and interesting rocks, most of them found in Eastern Mont. Each rock/fossil he found came with a story with a meaning behind it. Ken had such strong faith that helped carry him and his family through all the trials of life. He gave money to the homeless, reached out to those who needed help with so much compassion and empathy. He had a unique sense of humor coupled with sarcasm which made conversations with him highly entertaining. His love for his family was so pure and unconditional, we are all so blessed and thankful to have a man like that in our lives. He loved his long facetime calls with his son every night, sometimes talking in to the late hours, never running out of things to say. He looked forward to breakfast out with his daughter every Friday, movie nights with Maddy, listening to Bella’s sports play by play and also relaxing on the deck, enjoying the yard with his wife. He also had a very close relationhip with his son-in-law, Rob Hodous. Rob cherished the knowledge, guidance, love and support Ken shared with him on a consistant basis.

He was proceeded in death by his father, Clyde; brother, Steve; grandfather, Olaf Ostby; and grandmother, Marie Ostby.

He is survived by his mother, Lorraine Thompson, who was more than just a mother, she was his mentor and best friend. He is also survived by his sister, Kris Ruddy, of Glendive; his uncles, Norman (Jane) Ostby of Flatwillow Mont., David Ostby of Glendive, and Ray Ostby (Natha) of Saratoga, Calif.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Margaret (Rogness) Thompson; his daughter Leah Hodous, son-in-law Rob Hodous, and their children Maddy DeShaw(17) and Bella Hodous (11), all from Kalispell. Ken is also survived by his son, Sam Thompson of Bozeman.

There are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family that held a special place in his heart.

Ken will be greatly missed; we will hold him in our hearts and memories forever.

Upon Ken’s request, he has been cremated with no service planned.

Letters of condolence can be sent to Maggie Thompson, 91 Northern Lights Blvd. Kalispell, MT 59901.

Brett Michael Boje

Brett Michael Boje made his last wildly inappropriate and probably sarcastic comment on June 2, 2017.

Brett was born on May 24, 1982 and was immediately dubbed “His Parents’ Favorite Son”. Their constant love, support and caring far exceeded anything Brett would ever admit he needed.

Brett had three passions in his life: his daughter Aspen, who he affectionately named “Monkey,” his friends and farming. Whether it was the cab of the tractor, pickup, semi or combine he always had “Monkey” riding shotgun. He taught her his love of John Deere, country music, fishing, four-wheeling, camping, family and friends. While getting Aspen ready for school each day they would sing “I got my lunch packed up, my boots tied tight, hope I don’t get in a fight.”

Brett lived life to the fullest and was always up for a good time, he rarely met a person that he couldn’t befriend. His many adventures with his friends would often culminate in a nickname or coined phrase. He was always joking with people, often telling them they looked “hideous” or quoting Adam Sandler movies from the 90’s. However, if the joke ever turned on him he’d follow it up with his famous quote… “Go ahead, laugh it up.”

Whether he was working or playing, he loved spending time outside. He loved co-ed softball, the lake, fishing, hunting and snowmobiling. When not outdoors, he enjoyed watching movies, as well as the Golden State Warriors and the Montana Griz, but then again who doesn’t, well everyone except Steph. He was always on the hunt for a “good deal” and told everyone he met, that they needed to buy a Traeger. He absolutely loved Ford, but for some reason recently crossed over to the dark side. He was an avid hunter, tracking down anything from coyotes and pheasants to Gummy bears.

Brett is survived by his daughter Aspen, dog (Lellow), cat (Woody), parents (Gary “Boj” and Vic Boje) all from Glendive, his much older sister (Jen “nanny and our parents care giver”) and her much better half (Jon Byrd) from Whythehelldoyoulivethere “Evergreen, CO” and now the baby of the family, (Tai’a Boje) stationed somewhere in the US, nieces & nephews (Cooper, Conner, Abby, Emily & Kian), Grandparents (Norma Schultz) from Richey and (Floyd and Pat Boje) from Glendive, a multitude of aunts, uncles, cousins, and several Sally’s, Vern’s, and Buttcracks (aka his “Deere”est friends,) complete the list of those left to embellish his memory. If pressed, we may even get half a dozen of these folks to speak fondly of him.

Great Uncle (Tom Boje) has already fired up the Traeger, Grandma (Carolyn) has filled the freezer, Aunt (Shari) has already fixed his hair cut, Grandpa (Bob “Chuckie”) is waiting in the car and “Deere” friend, (Brandon Cullinan) has mapped out all the back roads.

A “Deere” Friends and Family Celebration will be held on Thursday, June 8 at 7 p.m. at the Makoshika Amphitheatre. We will be turning the light on for the last time for Brett on Friday, June 9 at 2 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Glendive with Pastor Will Johnson officiating. Silha Funeral Home of Glendive has been entrusted with the arrangements. We all know Brett didn’t like waiting for anyone, so whatever you do, don’t be late!!

As we all know, Brett wouldn’t spend a dime on flowers. With that said, in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Aspen Grace Boje Trust fund at US Bank.

“I really miss you Dad, Love you.  Lellow misses you, too. Love you to the moon & back” - Aspen

“The way I see it, we’ve only just begun…” – Happy Gilmore & Brett
