Paul Howard Coyan

Paul Howard Coyan, age 91, of Glendive, passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive.  

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at the Silha Funeral Home in Glendive.  A Rosary Service will be at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at the Silha Funeral Home.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 23, 2016 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glendive with Father Xavier Arimboor officiating. Rite of Committal with military honors will follow in the Dawson Memorial Cemetery. Silha Funeral Home of Glendive has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Paul was born on August 1, 1924 in Billings, a son of Paul and Marie (Pelatt) Coyan. He was raised and educated in Glendive, graduating from Dawson County High School with the class of 1942. Following his graduation, Paul enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II and was honorably discharged after four years of service. Paul then returned to Glendive and began a career as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, which he held for the next thirty-eight years.  During this time, Paul met Virginia Searer. They were married on September 24, 1949 and to this union three daughters and one son were born.  Paul and Virginia had been married for sixty-three years at the time of Virginia’s passing.

He enjoyed bowling, gardening, listening to all types of music and he especially loved designing, building and flying radio controlled airplanes. He was actively involved in the Glendive RC Bush Pilots for over fifty years. Paul loved his family very much and enjoyed spending as much time with them as he could.

Paul was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the National Association of Letter Carriers, the VFW Post #1125 and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Marie Coyan; wife, Virginia Coyan; son, Michael Paul Coyan; and brother, Father George Coyan.

Paul is survived by his three daughters, Anne (Doug) Dreher of Devil’s Lake, N.D., Susan (Richard) Folden of Parshall, N.D., and Mary (Barry) Perryman of Reno, Nev.; six grandchildren, Nathan Coyan of Missoula, Erik Coyan of Pappillion, Neb., Kai Coyan of Jamestown, N.D., Jessica Folden of Parshall, Colette (Craig) Smith of Lander, Wyo., and Amber (Matt) Nelson of Laramie, Wyo.; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Dick Coyan of White Bear Lake, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
