Dennis Hjorth, age 91 of Fallon, passed away at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive with family by his side.

Dennis was born on June 11, 1926 to Christ and Amelia (Starr) Hjorth in Glendive. Dennis was the second oldest of three children: Ivan and Marvin. He grew up on the family farm in Fallon attending schools in Thorson, Fallon and Terry. When he was a senior in high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1943. Dennis served in the Regimental Weapons Company in the battle for Iwo Jima. After being wounded in the war, Dennis was honorably discharged where he went back to the family farm to help out. He also worked various jobs for Buffalo Rapids and Shell Oil hauling crude oil. Over time he and his brother Ivan took over the family farm which was his true joy in life. On October 23, 1954 he married Margaret “Maggie” Manion. To this marriage they had four children: Carleen, Sharon, Christie and Doug. Together they farmed in the Fallon Flats for many years. They were the last of the original owners of the Fallon Buffalo Rapids Project. Every year the family would take family vacations after wheat harvest and before beet harvest. Dennis served on the Fallon Sewer Board, the Fallon Rural Fire Department, both Fallon and Terry School Boards, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He was an active member in the Hope American Lutheran Church in Fallon and was a big part in helping move the church from Marsh to where it stands in Fallon today. Dennis loved to collect antique tools, playing cards (especially pinochle) and enjoyed fishing. Maggie and Dennis used to enjoy bowling together, making regular trips into Glendive for league. Above all Dennis was a family man, loving his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dennis was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie; his parents; his brother, Marvin; and a sister-in-law, Maureen Hjorth.

Arnold “Arnie” Ames, age 61, of Glendive passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2017 after a tragic motorcycle accident.

Visitation was held from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at the Silha Funeral Home in Glendive and from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Glendive with a Family and Friends service at 7 p.m.  Funeral services were at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Will Johnson officiating. Interment with military honors will be in the Dawson Memorial Cemetery.  Silha Funeral Home of Glendive has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Arnie was born on August 12, 1955 to LeRoy and Alida (Moen) Ames in Williston, N.D. The family lived in Tioga, N.D. for a short time before moving to Watford City, N.D. where Arnie started his education. In 1962, the family moved to Glendive where Arnie continued his education, graduating from Dawson County High School with the class of 1973. While in high school, Arnie  participated in sports for the Red Devils, but most of his activities weren’t necessarily sanctioned by the school. After high school Arnie enlisted in the United States Army where he served for two years, primarily in Germany.   Upon his return to the states, Arnie continued his education by earning his associates degree from Miles Community College in Miles City and later attending Eastern Montana College in Billings. Following his education, Arnie returned to Glendive and worked for Anthony’s Clothing Store, which influenced his reputation as always being well dressed and clean cut. Arnie was later transferred to Boise, Idaho where he joined the National Guard.  In 1984 he transferred with the National Guard to Bakersfield, Calif. to be closer to his niece Jenny, who he helped care for, for the rest of his life. He continued with the National Guard until 1994 when Arnie decided to become a career member of the United States Army. During his career he received many accolades and was deployed to the middle east twice during Operation Desert Storm. In 2010, Arnie received his honorable discharge and retired from the Army to return to Glendive.  He worked for one of his best friends Tim Mort at Mort Distributing in Glendive and remained there until the time of his passing.

Arnie was a third generation veteran, he followed in his father’s footsteps and had always admired and looked up to him. He loved his family and friends, and was always willing to go above and beyond for all of them.  Arnie enjoyed hunting and fishing, carpentry, working on vehicles, riding his Harley Davidson and cruising in his Corvette. Arnie was a lifelong fan of the Beatles and the Dallas Cowboys. He was kind of a “movie star” or as close as Glendive will get to one, he was an extra in “Bronco Billy” which starred Clint Eastwood and “In The Army Now” starring Pauly Shore.  Arnie was also featured in one of the most popular episodes of “American Restoration” when he had his 1962 Corvette pedal car turned into a go-cart.

Arnie was a member of the Glendive Masonic Lodge #31, the NRA, ABATE, Glendive Moose Lodge #949 and the VFW. He was very active in Zion Lutheran Church where he was the head deacon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother-in-law, Bob McLain.

Arnie is survived by his son, Jacob Ames of Bakersfield; four sisters, Lyla (Larry) Mitchell of Sheridan, Wyo., LaNette (Dick) Simonton of Glendive, Andrea (Keith) Huschka of Glendive, and Christie McLain of Apple Valley, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested in Arnie’s name to:  Zion Lutheran Church, 401 Riverview Ave., Glendive, MT 59330.

Clara T. Baker

Clara T. Baker left her earthly family to be with our Lord on July 7, 2017, just a month shy of her 87th birthday.  Her mother Rosina Treftz Schumacher’s record setting 100 years is still intact.  She joins her father Christian Treftz, beloved brothers Gust, Sam, Hank, Gordon and Elmer and sisters Emily and Joan for a great big celebration at the choicest fishing hole in heaven.

Clara was born in Roundtown as her husband  Eddy likes to call it—Circle, Mont.   Her parents moved the family to a small farm outside of Richey when she was a wee girl. Work was a central part of who Clara was.  Among her first “jobs” were picking potato bugs off the potato plants on the farm for a penny a piece and herding sheep with her sister Helen astride Buster, a noble steed. The sheep frequently wandered untended, but rattlesnakes feared them! In order to go to high school, Clara  lived in a shack in Richey (which, according to her, gave the place too much credit) and took care of her younger siblings. She played half court basketball in a long skirt with bloomers (because girls certainly weren’t up to a full court game.) After finishing high school, she married Pete Vine. Eleven years later, they welcomed a bouncing baby boy they named Michael Pete because Clara loved that ear worm (er song) Michael Row Your Boat Ashore. She helped guide and loved her step daughter Dianna. When Mike was five, she and Pete divorced.

Single and free for the first time in her life, Clara worked for a bank and later for Vern Paulson’s accounting and insurance company in Glendive. Reportedly, her closet was full of fabulous shoes.  She was a dish and had a lot of dates. There was one special date though,—her sister Joan’s brother-in-law Eddy. They tripped the light fantastic at the Triangle Supper Club in Sidney with dinner which was always followed by dancing. Anyone who knows Eddy and Clara knows they both have twinkle toes when it comes to the waltz.  Eddy proposed and Clara gave him exactly the answer every guy dreads—“I’ll think about it.” Mike was in favor of the match. The wise-beyond-his-years 5 year old told her “Let’s marry Eddy.” Tragedy struck, and Clara had a burst artery. As she was being read the last rites, she called Eddy to her bedside and told him “yes.”  Her sister Martha McCloy made her wedding suit because she was too small for any clothing at the store.  Clara quit work, and she and Eddy moved to Sidney.  Eddy told Clara he couldn’t have kids, but surprise! surprise! They were expecting!  Mike was excited about the thought of a little baby, but there was a problem. His mom’s name was Baker, the new baby’s name was going to be Baker and even the cat’s name was Baker. So on a Monday in December, he wrote “BAKER” on the court forms and became a Baker too. His new little sister Martha (Marty) was born the same week on a Friday.

Clara and Eddy moved to a farm/ranch 28 miles north of Terry. They worked side by side raising their family and caring for their land and animals. Clara made generous quantities of food and transported it in a dishtowel cozy to the fields, so Eddy didn’t have to leave the tractor. She disliked picnics as a result.  Far from her glamorous office days, Clara frequently sported overalls, a kerchief and overshoes as she and Eddy fed the livestock. Her one nod of pleasure to her old life in the city was a weekly trip to Don’s Beauty Shop for a weekly “hair bending” (as Eddy called it.) Eddy and Clara invited a handsome, sweet teenager to live in their home, so he could finish his senior year at Terry High School. Greg Laub holds the title of honorary son in both Clara’s and Eddy’s hearts.

In the mid 1980’s Clara and Eddy lost their battle to stay afloat on the ranch, and restarted their lives in Billings. Clara landed a job she loved at MDU. She worked there until she retired. She treasured her many friends from work and even 20 years after she retired still loved to regale her family and friends of her good old days at MDU.

After she and Eddy retired, the adventures really got started. They dug out their address book, packed their beloved Bichon Frise Sammy in their Lincoln and set out for a grand tour of our amazing country visiting relatives and national landmarks along the way. Six thousand miles later they shared pictures and stories of all their adventures. Clara took up watercolor painting, and she often said it opened her eyes up to viewing nature and the world around her in a whole new way. Eddy and Clara bought a “tin shack,” as Clara called it, in Mesa, Ariz. in the Valley Palms Mobile Home Park.  They made many treasured friends and did everything—bike parades, “senior” prom, hamburger feeds, shuffleboard and pool tournaments.  Clara became a ferociously, competitive dominoes player.  Actually come to think of it, she was ferociously competitive at any game. She always played her competitive nature off with fake singsong questions and a little giggle: “What is the score?  Oh, I’m ahead?” “Hee! hee!” Clara and Eddy went on an Alaskan cruise with their children Mike and Marty, daughter-in-law Laura, and beloved grandson Talon. Laura and Clara routinely got into giggling fits which lead to quick trips to the restroom. Marty and their “favorite son-in-law” Dennis Rehbein, took them on a cruise through the Panama Canal. She loved the port of Costa Rica for its verdant landscape and friendly people. She and Eddy were delighted to learn about, and fell instantly in love, with their great-granddaughter Elyanna upon meeting her.  Clara loved to shop for special clothes for little Ely, choosing each outfit very carefully. Eddy and Clara celebrated their 50th anniversary last April with a “small gathering” of family and friends that filled their church like it was Christmas Eve.

Clara was the teller and keeper of her family’s stories. Any time there was a family gathering, she told a story befitting the occasion.  She was a talented embroiderer. The back of one of her dishtowels looked as good as the front. And she usually added much more detail than the pattern called for. Clara loved fishing, quilting, painting with watercolors, watching scary movies with Mike, going on mother/daughter vacations with Marty, her family, God, Eddy, America and her friends—not necessarily in that order. Clara had a gift for making everyone feel special and loved. The Lutheran Church has been at the center of Eddy and Clara’s lives together.  Where ever they have lived, they have loved and served the Lord together with their church families with fervor. Clara is survived by Eddy—her partner, her best friend, and the love of her life; her beloved children Mike Baker and Marty Rehbein, daughter-in-law Laura Baker, son-in-law Dennis Rehbein; step daughter Dianna Massey and honorary son Greg Laub; grandson Talon Baker, and great granddaughter Ely; her sisters Martha McCloy and Helen Beres of Glendive; countless nieces and nephews, and a treasure trove of closely kept and loved friends.

Funeral and burial services have taken place. She is interred at the Richey cemetery.

Dave Lassle

Dave Lassle of Fallon, Mont. passed away peacefully in his sleep during the early morning hours of July 22, 2017.  Dave was 63 years old and still worked a 40 hour week, even though he was looking forward to retirement.

David (as his Mother insisted on calling him) was born on December 14, 1953 in Terry, the first son of Christ and Berta Doffinger Lassle.  His Mother and older brother, Helmut had emigrated from Germany in 1952 and she married Christ Lassle in March of 1953. Brothers Daniel and Duane, and sister, Deloris completed the family. Christ’s mother also lived with them in Fallon, which was a good thing because it took Mother, Grandmother, and big brother, Helmut to keep 3 little blonde headed boys in check. Being so close in age the 3 Lassle boys always had someone to play with and a little sister to tease all the time.

Church was a big part of family life and Dave was confirmed in the EUB Church in 1968. They went to church every Sunday and Wednesday. Mother also insisted that they attended Bible School at every church in Fallon each summer. This continued until they were teenagers and started working.

Dave worked around Fallon and for farmers in the Fallon area until he graduated from Terry High School in 1972 and went off to college in Bozeman and then Billings. After college he went to work for Glendive Coke and became the “Coke Man.” He made a lot of great friends during this time and he loved Coke for the rest of his life.  In 2006 he made a career change and went to work for Prairie County with the Road Department. He continued working there until he passed.

Dave loved to have fun, and being a cowboy was fun for him. He was very proud to carry the American and Montana flags in parades with his friend Dan Dukart.  He was an avid reader and would trade books with whoever had one he wanted to read. His latest hobby was flying radio controlled airplanes and he was thrilled to get to go to Nevada each winter with Dale Galland to fly planes on the salt flats.

Dave is preceded in death by his Parents and Grandparents.

Dave is survived by his brothers, Helmut (Nina), Daniel (Pam) and Duane, all of Terry; sister, Deloris (David) Killion of Discovery Bay, Calif., and many nephews and nieces. He is also survived by his pal Muggles, who was with him until the end.

Visitation for David Lassle will be on Sunday, July 30, 2017 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Terry.  Services will be on Monday, July 31, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Evangelical (EUB) Church in Fallon with Rev. Nefzger officiating. Interment will be in the Fallon Community Cemetery.  Condolences to the family may be sent by visiting www.stevensonandsons.com.

Should friends desire, memorials can be made to the Fallon Fire Department or the Fallon Park at P.O. Box 81, Fallon, MT 59326

The family would like to thank the Fallon community for taking care of Dave and checking up on him when he didn’t show up for coffee.

The Sunset has called you home, Dave.  Keep Flying!

Army Pfc. William R. Butz, 18, passed away approximately November 30, 1950, while bravely serving his country during the Korean War. William was one of many unidentified soldiers who died at the “inlet” near the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea. His remains were finally identified April 2016, and he will be returned to his place of final rest with his family in Vancouver, Wash.

William was born October 28, 1932 in Glendive to Leeomer and Zella Butz. In 1943, William moved to the Heights in Vancouver. At the age of 17, he joined the army by fibbing about his age, stating he was born in 1931 instead of 1932. Shortly after turning 18, as a member of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, while under heavy attack by enemy forces, William was killed. He was reported MIA once his Division was back in communication on December 12, 1950.
